On this date in ... 1917: William P. Capes, secretary of the New York State Conference of Mayors and director of the State Bureau of Municipal Ownership, who worked out of Albany, testified in New York City that his wife had no grounds for divorce because her witnesses looked through peepholes and saw him in the apartment of Jeanne Carpenter. Capes explained that he was collaborating with Carpenter on a series of magazine articles about his organizations and it was more convenient to work there. Mrs. Capes' chief witness, her brother, testified that he had bored two holes in Carpenter's Lexington Avenue apartment door to observe her and his brother-in-law.
