On this date in ... 1918: A bull broke loose from the freight car he had been kept in for several days at the West Albany stock yards, severely goring Eli W. Griffith, busting through a fence and terrorizing the workers at the yards before climbing up onto the West Albany bridge. A New York Central policeman shot the bull while it was attacking Griffith for a second time. The bull fell into one of the pits below, but by this time the 60-year-old boiler inspector had suffered deep cuts to the head, as well as a fractured skull and several broken bones that doctors at the Albany Hospital declared critical.
