Direct support professionals rally for wage help in budget

ALBANY -- Direct support professionals and those who need their services rallied in the Capitol's War Room on Wednesday in support of funding in the upcoming state budget to help boost wages. The rally — at which, by the way, advocates brought a cake for Gov. Andrew Cuomo's 60th birthday — drew lawmakers from the Assembly and state Senate who don't appear to be backing off just because there is a tough fiscal situation coming up. The message was that budget deficit or not, direct support professionals need financial assistance. "The top priorities of government should be making sure that our most vulnerable in our communities are taken care of," Sen. George Amedore, R-Rotterdam, said.
