On this date in ... 1918: Businessmen in the Capital Region and throughout the state were alarmed with the order issued by federal Fuel Administrator Harry Garfield calling for Heatless Mondays nationwide to conserve coal. Gov. Charles Whitman saw just how controversial an issue the order was when he arrived at the Capitol in Albany to find hundreds of telegrams addressed to him, all calling for him to protest on their behalf to the federal fuel commission or the president directly, or at least appeal the order. 1968: A new approach to job hiring was being launched in the spring when Capital Region employers would hold their first "Job Fair" in April at the Washington Avenue Armory in Albany.
